Welcome!

Welcome to the April issue of Dispatch. Although parts of the country are still waiting for spring to arrive, this time of year brings fresh focus and new vigour.

As always, we eagerly anticipate NADbank's report and we are very pleased by the recently released 2008 results. They revealed that our online and print strategies are paying off. The Globe has the largest combined print and online readership of any newspaper in Canada. The results reinforce our conviction that consistent quality, innovation and commitment will help us maintain a leadership position in the Canadian market. More information about our NADbank results can be found below and on on GlobeLink.

The Globe continues to focus on investing in our product to create the best editorial environment in Canada for your clients. Earlier this week, The Globe and Mail launched a significant redesign and enhancement of Globe Investor website. The preferred financial site for Canadians, an average 1.3 million unique visitors visit Globe Investor monthly. For advertisers, it is a highly credible and engaging environment to reach consumers focused on their money and their future. You can read more about the new Globe Investor in this issue.

Our advertising team is especially excited about the latest customized campaign in partnership with Microsoft, involving innovative online and in-print executions. Launching today, The Evolving Economy targets medium and large businesses with advice from some of Canada's top business minds through a seven-week video and print campaign. Watch for it in ROB and globeandmail.com. This is just one example of how we continue to bring winning media solutions to our clients, the result of a collaborative, marketing oriented sales team who understand their clients' needs and provide a creative and fully integrated cross-platform environment that is unparalleled in our industry.

We are also looking forward to the announcement of this year's Globe and Mail Young Lions winners later this month. Record numbers of contestants entered the competition this year, which speaks to a healthy, vibrant advertising and marketing industry in Canada.

Young Lions Attracts Record Numbers
The entry deadline has passed and jurors have been selected, but the competition for The Globe and Mail Young Lions Competition is just heating up. This year's competition reached record-breaking heights by attracting 154 entries, almost double from last year.

Who will represent Canada and compete in this year's Young Lions Competition at the 2009 Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival?

The 2009 Young Lions Competition challenge brief was linked with Médecins Sans Frontières / Doctors Without Borders, an independent international medical humanitarian organization that delivers emergency aid in more than 70 countries around the world. The target audience was Canadian urban working females aged 45-64 who are informed about global issues and interested in human rights.

Entrants competed in one of four categories: print, cyber, media and film. The winning teams from each category will win an all expenses paid trip to compete for Canada in Cannes Young Lions Competition. Winners will be announced on April 29 at Stimulant's Shift Disturbers Event and will also be posted in our Young Lions section.

Did You Know
Overworked and Under-Rewarded Workers are Taking Revenge
New poll findings from ADP Canada reveal that while Canadians are working longer hours to keep pace in tough economic times, they're finding ways to reward themselves on company time. According to the poll, 21 per cent are working longer hours, and 20 per cent are changing their work habits by taking work home more often, working through lunch or avoiding sick days. Those not compensated for extra work with time off or extra pay (like overtime) are leaving early, taking longer lunch breaks, arriving late or working at a more leisurely pace.

Life in the Fast Lane
Accelerating change can be dizzying. Consider some of the following facts that appear in the popular video "Did you know?".
  • The top 10 in-demand jobs did not exist in 2004; and one in four workers have been with their current employer for less than a year.
  • There are about 540,000 words in the English language...5 times as many as during Shakespeare's time.
  • To reach a market audience of 50 million, it took radio 30 years, television 13, the Internet 4, iPod 3 and Facebook 2.
Based on a Powerpoint presentation developed by high school administrator Karl Fisch for his colleagues, "Did you Know?" is available on YouTube.
