About the Festival
Sure, Cannes Lions takes place on the French Riviera, with its golden sands, tanned bodies and endless nights. But it isn't all schmoozing on the beach.

With seminars, workshops, film screenings, exhibitions, galas, award ceremonies and unique opportunities to pursue new business, the Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival is the world's premier showcase for advertising excellence.

The Globe and Mail is proud to be Canada's official festival representative and is dedicated to supporting every Canadian who participates--as an entrant, a judge or a delegate.

Cannes Lions 2009
In 2009, there was a sharper focus than ever, as marketers zeroed in on strategies that embraced both more transparent ROIs and more innovative uses of media.

Canada had a pretty good showing in last year. Our country submitted its highest number of entries ever and the Cannes Lions jury featured the largest number of Canucks ever, including the first-ever Canadian judges on both the Design and Titanium categories.

What's more, Canada earned its first-ever Young Lions award at the festival--a Silver in the Film category for Chris Booth and Joel Pylypiw of DDB Toronto.

As this country's Cannes Lions representative, one of our responsibilities is to stage the Canadian Young Lions competition that pre-qualifies winners for the international Cannes Young Lions showdown--and covering the expenses of winners who get to go to the big show on our dime.

We're very proud of our role in nurturing young Canadian talent, and even prouder of Chris and Joel's achievement. They were up against some pretty stiff competition--as you can see on our Canadian Young Lions winners page.
