Observations from a Cannes newbie

As a first timer at the Festival, I thought I’d share my observations and surprises:

1.With print/outdoor, strong visual ideas that transcend language dominated, which isn’t a surprise, but the production quality was eye opening. The craft behind the photography/illustrations is absolutely stunning.

2. Where’s Italy? As Canadians we’re quite aware (and often disgruntled about) our performance at Cannes. Italy, a country of impeccable design, is a practical no-show. And not just this year. Surprising. (Maybe Agency59 should open an Italy office. However, rather than Milan perhaps Corleone, Sicily. I can already envision an interesting approach to negotiating fees).

3. The youth component is real. So many conferences have a token involvement from young people, but here it’s legit. They are truly a part of the whole experience.

4. A few of the presentations where I had high hopes were self-serving and therefore lame. Sell me a home, don’t sell me here. Give me sneak-peaks here.

5. The parties. I was expecting late nights and lots of drinking, but I didn’t realize it was like a crazy College frat party every night, all night. That’s my excuse for any typos.
