In print for over 165 years, The Globe and Mail continues to be recognized for its dedication to excellence and high journalistic standards.

Below is a list of our most recent corporate, newspaper, magazine and online awards.

Newspaper Awards
The Globe and Mail has been named one of the world’s best-printed newspapers.

On October 31, 2012, the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers, known as WAN-IFRA, welcomed The Globe into the top 80 International Newspaper Color Quality Club for 2012-2014. Montreal’s La Presse was the only other Canadian newspaper named to the club, which recognizes the highest-quality printed products in the newspaper world.

The Globe was also rated No. 2 in the world for heatset colour printing, which is used for more glossy paper. It is a process by which a heat source evaporates the oils in the ink, drying it more quickly. The ink rests on the surface of the paper, rather than being absorbed.

Emmy Nomination
The Globe has received 3 Emmy nods for major multimedia projects, most recently for Inside Hamas . Director Patrick Martin took Globe readers inside a group little understood, using traditional strengths of The Globe - in-depth reporting - with our innovative approach to story-telling in the evolving digital world.

Society for News Design

The Society for News Design, who previously named The Globe and Mail the best newspaper redesign in the world, in February awarded The Globe nine "Awards of Excellence" for the following:

Society of News Design: Best of News Design Creative Competition
The Globe proudly received the Award of Excellence for its 2010 redesign as part of the 32nd Edition Best of News Design Creative Competition and was the only paper to win for a revamp of the entire publication, as opposed to individual pages or sections.

“We called the redesign ‘Proudly Print.’ We are a digital leader, but we’re not shy about putting out one of the world’s great newspapers,” said Globe editor-in-chief John Stackhouse. “Design matters more than ever. We all have countless things fighting for our attention and the ability to use design effectively – to make readers stop and take notice – is essential to journalism in an increasingly crowded space”

National Newspaper Awards
On May 14, 2010, The Globe received seven of the 22 awards presented at the
National Newspaper Awards (NNAs), , including:
  • Stephanie Nolen for explanatory journalism, with a story about India's ongoing struggle with malnutrition in an age of economic prosperity
  • A team from Report on Business - Greg Keenan, Jacquie McNish and Janet McFarland - won in the business category for a project on Canada's pension crisis
  • Jason Chiu and David Pratt won the presentation award for The Globe’s special series Decoding the Decade
  • Andre Picard won for column writing
  • Geoffrey York for international reporting for his work on the abduction of Robert Fowler and Louis Guay
  • Adam Radwanski for editorial writing
  • Brian Gable for editorial cartooning

Mitchener Award
Paul Koring, The Globe’s Washington-based foreign correspondent, was a finalist for the 2010 Michener Award, recognizing public service journalism for his work on the Abousfian Abdelrazik file (the Canadian citizen in Sudan denied a passport by Canada). This is the eighth year in a row The Globe has been nominated. Koring was also recently awarded Amnesty International’s top prize for human rights reporting in Canada in 2009.

2011 Great Ideas Awards
The2011 Great Ideas Awards, is a program that celebrates the marketing and promotion efforts of Canadian newspapers. We are pleased to share that the following Globe campaigns were recognized and awarded for their achievements:
  • Canada: Our Time to Lead an 8 week program that asked Canadians to discover, discuss and debate issues of importance that our country is facing. Awarded in the Newspaper Marketing and Promotion category.
  • 25 Transformational Canadians marking Cisco Canada's 25th anniversary, this campaign honoured individuals who are catalysts for change - recognized 25 individuals who significantly impacted society in five key areas. Developed in partnership with The Globe and Mail, Cyberpresse and CTV, the campaign won an award in the Promotional Campaign category.

2012 National Magazine Awards

Report on Business magazine turned in another great performance at the 35th Anniversary of the National Magazine Awards, winning 3 gold and 4 silver.
  • Where Asbestos is Just a Fact of Life published in December 2011. Nominated for 5 awards, taking gold in the business category, silver in politics and public interest; and honourable mentions in investigative reporting, health and medicine and science, technology and the environment category.
  • A Pipeline Runs Through It published in January 2011, took gold in science, technology and the environment category.
  • The Coveteur published in December 2011, received gold and was named best new visual creator(s) for a gifts spread.
  • A Gift for Mr. Hossain (September 2011) by Greg McArthur received silver in the Business category.
  • 19 Villagers Dead / $155 Million Profit (October 2011) by Geoffrey York received silver in the Investigative Reporting category.
  • Domenic Macri received a silver for Best Magazine Cover (March 2011).

EPPY Awards
The Globe and Mail's website has won 8 prestigious EPPY awards, including sharing the top honour for best large daily newspaper website for the second time in three years.

The most recent EPPY awards in June 2010 were for Best Newspaper-Affiliated Website with over 1 million unique monthly visitors, and for Best Web Special Feature - Enterprise, with over 1 million unique monthly visitors, for Behind the Veil.

international Design Award
On October 1, 2011 The Globe was awarded the World's Best-Designed Website prize by the Society of News Design, for its modern and elegant look as well as good use of multimedia.

“The award is a huge recognition from our peers,” said Mike Pletch, the Globe’s manager of creative design for digital media, who accepted the award. “Rethinking how an online news site should work for our readers' lifestyles and needs was a major factor in leading us to the current design. It had to look great and work for our readers. Our multimedia options span all content and really broaden the news experience for our readers.”

General Excellence in Journalism
In September 2011, The Globe proudly accepted the award for General Excellence in Journalism (medium site) at the Online News Association Conference & Awards. The Globe was up against some world-class contenders, such as CBC News, the Las Vegas Sun and The Oaklahoman.

"It is a great achievement to be recognized within the industry by our peers, and a tribute to our entire staff who make The Globe and Mail a digital destination for Canadians and the country's most celebrated news site," said John Stackhouse, Editor in Chief of The Globe and Mail.

Automobile Journalists Association of Canada Awards
On October 28, 2010, GlobeDrive.com was recognized as the Best Website: Design and Layout in the 27th annual Automotive Journalism Awards. This was the third year in a row that The Globe's automotive coverage and website has won an AJAC award but the first time under the new name and design of GlobeDrive.com.

Canadian Online Publishing Awards
On October 20, 2010, The Globe and Mail's website received the award for Best News Coverage from the Canadian Online Publishing Awards (produced by Masthead). The Globe had four other finalist nominations in this year's awards: Best Blog (Ottawa Notebook), Best Video (Behind the Veil), and in the Cross Platform and Mobile App categories.

Emmy Award (News & Documentary)
In 2009, The Globe won an Emmy award for the Talking to the Taliban series, under the New Approaches to News and Documentary Programming category. On September 27, 2010, The Globe's Behind the Veil multimedia series on women in Afghanistan won an Emmy award in the same category. The Globe was the only Canadian contender winning against the New York Times, Reuters, the San Jose Mercury News and Tsunami.trust.org.
